John Wayne teams with his long-time friend and favorite director John Ford for this fifth screen version of Peter B. Kyne's oft-filmed 1913 novel. Ford's directorial acumen, with the help of stunning Technicolor photography make this 1948 version the best screen adaptation of Kyne's novel. Bandits Hightower, Fuerte, and Abilene flee from a posse across the unforgiving Arizona wasteland. In a lethal sandstorm, the outlaws come across a lone woman about to give birth. The mother dies during the delivery, but with her last words she makes the men promise to protect her child. Now, as the three hardened gunmen head to the town of New Jerusalem with a swaddled infant--retracing a pilgrimage taken 2,000 years ago through a desert in the Holy Land--each man undergoes a fundamental transformation.
