August 1949. 16 men parachuted into Mann Gulch, Montana, to fight a forest fire. Only three left alive. A mixture of heat, wind patterns, and atmospheric conditions caused a "blow-up" and the resulting fireball chased the men in a race they couldn't win. The lessons learned in Mann Gulch led to new, scientifically-based methods.
