But it all began in Australia, when weeks of torrential rain and cyclones battered much of the country. After a decade of crippling droughts, said to be the worst in a century, Australia's climate switched. From September 2010, much of eastern Australia experienced its wettest spring on record. Crops were soaked and water catchments were full for the first time in years.
