The mystery of coma and brain injury has captivated America's imagination for decades but little is understood about the injured brain and its ability to heal. The Center for Head Injuries at JFK Medical Center is one of America's premier institutions for studying and rehabilitating brain-injured patients. This film follows four patients at the Center who have suffered traumatic brain injuries. Over the course of one year, they will emerge from their comas into either a persistent vegetative state, a minimally conscious state, or beyond.
